Philippine vice president says president wants to get rid of her after police report
Wednesday, the Philippines’ vice president who is in trouble said that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was trying to get rid of her. This came after the national police officially accused her of assault and pressure.
Police say Vice President Sara Duterte was directly involved in recent events in the lower house of Congress and at a hospital, where she was responsible for assault, disobedience, and grave coercion. This is the latest twist in a dramatic feud between two powerful political families.
Duterte, who is the daughter of fiery former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been the target of a heated congressional investigation into how much she spent as vice president and education minister. During the investigation, she has avoided questions and fought with lawmakers several times. Her denial of guilt.
One of her assistants was held at the lower house complex and taken to a government hospital for medical care, which made things worse. Police say that Duterte’s security team pushed a police officer.
Chief of the Philippine National Police Rommel Francisco Marbil said, “The PNP remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold justice and make sure that everyone is held accountable under the law, no matter what position they hold.”
He told the press that the charges “do not hold water.”
She said of her relationship with Marcos, “I think we reached the point of no return.”
“It’s clear they want to hurt me.” They want to take away my power.”
“NO THREAT”
Duterte is in a nasty fight with Marcos and his cousin, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, ever since their two powerful families broke up, ending a strong partnership that helped Marcos win the 2022 election by a huge margin.
She told Marcos on Saturday that she had paid an assassin to kill the president, his wife, and Romualdez in case she herself was killed. This got her a harsh reprimand from Marcos.
Tuesday, police called Duterte in to be questioned about the statement. She said it was taken out of context to make it seem like Marcos’ life was in danger, which was not true. She called her comments a “conditional act of revenge.”
As of Wednesday, Duterte said, “There is no active threat if I do not get killed.” He has not said what kind of threat there is to her life.
There is a bigger fight between the Philippines’ two most powerful leaders. This comes just a few weeks after Duterte’s unstable father was the subject of endless congressional inquiries into the killings that happened during his notorious “war on drugs” from 2016 to 2022.
During those hearings, the Marcos administration made it clear for the first time that it would help any foreign effort to arrest the former president, who is being looked into by the foreign Criminal Court for possible crimes against humanity.
Rodrigo Duterte said in court that he was the only one to blame for the bloody crackdown and was ready to be put on trial.
