Before Taylor Swift’s performance, Ed Sheeran helped Ipswich sign a player, according to the club’s CEO

With Ipswich Town CEO Mark Ashton revealing that the British singer assisted the Premier League team in acquiring a new player—shortly before he was scheduled to perform with Taylor Swift—Ed Sheeran can now add player recruiting to his sparkling accomplishments.

Sheeran, 33, bought a minority share in his hometown team, which was promoted to the Premier League the previous season, in August, fulfilling a “football fan’s dream” even though he did not join their board.

Sheeran did, however, have an executive box at Portman Road Stadium, and he jumped at the chance to close a deal with a potential recruit after learning that they were ardent supporters.

At a Soccerex event in Miami, Ashton stated, “We were trying to convince one particular player to join the football club in the summer and quickly realized that he was an Ed Sheeran fan.”

“Just before he took the stage with Taylor Swift, Ed jumped on a Zoom call with him at the training ground. That should have been a major factor in the player crossing the finish line.

“We’ve gone from the third tier of English football to the Premier League, but we haven’t forgotten our roots and Ed’s a key part of that, the work that we do in our local communities is central to us.”

“He’s certainly scoring a few goals!” Ashton continued, without identifying the guy.

Sammie Szmodics, who joined Ipswich from Blackburn Rovers in August, and Liam Delap, who arrived from Manchester City in July, are the only two players who have scored more than one goal this season.

A day prior to Ipswich’s announcement of Szmodics’ signing, Sheeran had joined Swift during her Eras Tour show at Wembley Stadium.

After his overhead kick goal against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month gave Ipswich their first victory of the season, the Irish attacker also shared a photo of himself and Sheeran celebrating.
