A Florida man was detained on suspicion of planning a bombing attack on the New York Stock Exchange
A man from Florida has been taken into custody for attempting to “reset” the United States by bombing the New York Stock Exchange.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has charged and arrested a man from Florida with planning to detonate a bomb there, according to court documents.
“The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida has accused Harun Abdul-Malik Yener of attempting to use an explosive device to damage or destroy a building used in interstate commerce.”
In reference to the former al-Qaeda commander who was responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the United States, the FBI claims that he recorded himself saying, “I feel like Osama Bin Laden.”
After learning that he was storing bomb-making materials in an unlocked storage container, federal investigators started looking into him in February.
According to court records, agents found “bombmaking sketches, numerous watches with timers, electronic circuit boards, and other electronics” during their search of the Coral Springs complex.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by the federal public defender assigned to represent Mr. Yener in the Southern District of Florida.
According to investigators’ records, Mr. Yener allegedly informed an undercover agent last week that he intended to execute the attack the week prior to Thanksgiving, which falls on November 28.
The attack in lower Manhattan would be “Hella easy,” according to Mr. Yener, who allegedly informed an agent, “that would be a great hit.”
He allegedly informed authorities he intended to wear a disguise during the attack and send a taped statement to the media, and he allegedly searched the internet extensively for construction instructions for bombs.
In order to achieve a “reboot” and/or “reset” of the US government, Mr. Yener allegedly had “motivation for bombing the NYSE,” according to investigators.
“Anything and nothing outside” the building “will be wiped out,” and “anything inside there would be killed,” according to reports that Mr. Yener told undercover investigators, adding that the explosion would be “like a small nuke went off.”
According to reports, he ran a YouTube channel with videos on how to create explosives out of everyday objects.
Court filings state that Mr. Yener, a resident of southern Florida, is homeless.
He will be held till his trial, the Associated Press news agency said, after making his initial court appearance on Wednesday.
In recent months, there have been several arrests regarding US national security.
Earlier this month, an Afghan man was arrested in October for reportedly organizing an attack to coincide with election day.
A man from Pakistan was also detained in August on suspicion of planning to kill US officials on behalf of Iran.
