Spurs wants to appeal Bentancur’s racial statement suspension

After Rodrigo Bentancur was suspended for seven games for making a racist comment regarding teammate Son Heung-min, Tottenham Hotspur announced on Wednesday that they will appeal the suspension’s duration.

Although Bentancur had rejected the claim, an impartial regulatory body determined that it was true, and the 27-year-old was suspended by the Football Association and fined 100,000 pounds ($126,660).

“While we accept the guilty finding against Rodrigo by the independent regulatory commission, we believe the subsequent sanction is severe,” the organization stated in a statement.

“Rodrigo will remain suspended from domestic competitions while the appeal is heard.”

“Or one of Sonny’s cousins as they all look more or less the same,” Bentancur said in response to presenter Rafa Cotelo’s request for a Spurs player’s shirt on the June episode of the Uruguayan television show Por La Camiseta.

Bentancur will miss a number of important league games, including Saturday’s away match against Manchester City and the December home matches against Chelsea and Liverpool. In addition, he will not play against Manchester United in the League Cup quarterfinal.

($1 is equivalent to 0.7895 pounds).
