Orban of Hungary says that if Trump wins, Europe will have to rethink its backing for Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Sunday that if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States, Europe “will not be able to bear the burdens of the war alone” and that the continent will need to reconsider its support for Ukraine.

Orban has stated that he believes Trump agrees with him and will work with Ukraine to reach a peace agreement. He also opposes military aid to Ukraine.

He believes that in Tuesday’s U.S. election, former President Trump, the Republican candidate, would defeat Democratic contender Kamala Harris.

“We (in Europe) need to realize that if there will be a pro-peace president in America, which I not only believe in but I also read the numbers that way, … if what we expect happens and America becomes pro-peace, then Europe cannot remain pro-war,” Orban stated.

He stated that when European leaders gather in Budapest next week for a meeting of the European Political Community and a less formal gathering of EU leaders, Ukraine will be a top topic of discussion.

“Europe cannot bear the burden of [the war] alone, and if Americans switch to peace, then we also need to adapt, and this is what we will discuss in Budapest,” Orban stated.

Europe is anxious about how the war in Ukraine and the security of the continent will be impacted by the results of the U.S. election.

Orban’s strong links to Russia and resistance to help for Ukraine have infuriated Brussels.

In July, Peter Szijjarto, the foreign minister of Hungary, stated that the Hungarian government saw Trump as a “chance for peace” in Ukraine.

Orban stated in July that his team was helping Trump’s advisors on immigration and family issues. He gave Trump a call on Thursday to wish him success before the election on Tuesday.
