At Iran University, a woman takes off all but her underwear, supposedly to protest the requirement that women wear hijabs
At an Iranian university, a young woman took off all but her underwear, what seemed to be a protest against the country’s strict Islamic dress code.
In a shocking act that has been seen around the world, a young woman at an Iranian university took off all of her clothes except her underwear. Many people think she did this to protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress code. The event happened on Saturday at the Islamic Azad University and was caught on tape. It was shared widely on social media. Security guards can be seen holding the woman, whose name has not been released, in the video.
After what happened, a university spokesman named Amir Mahjob wrote on the platform X (formerly Twitter) that the woman was found to be “under severe mental pressure” and that she has “a mental disorder.” But not everyone agrees with the stated answer. Many people on social media think she did what she did on purpose as a quiet but strong way to protest against the rules that say women must wear the hijab, which has become a lightning rod in Iran.
“Being seen in public in your underwear is one of the worst things that can happen to a woman,” Lei La wrote on X. “This is a response to the government’s insistence that women wear the hijab.” The act of taking off clothes has struck a chord with both Iranians and people from other countries who have seen it. It shows a deep-seated anger at what some see as harsh modesty laws enforced by the government.
What’s going on with the woman right now is still unknown. A big Iranian newspaper, Hamshahri, said that a “informed source” said she would probably be sent to a mental health center after the probe.
This event is the most recent example of an act of defiance by an Iranian woman in public. Mahsa Amini was a young Kurdish woman who was arrested by Iran’s morality police in September 2022 for reportedly breaking hijab rules. Since her death, there has been a clear change. After Amini’s death, there were protests all over the country. It was one of the biggest public displays of discontent in Iran in recent years. Even though the protests were put down by the authorities in the end, they started a rising wave of resistance, especially among women who have been removing their masks in clear violation of the law.
Women all over Iran keep breaking the dress rule, even though it’s dangerous. It has become a sign for many of the fight for political and personal freedoms. This new event at Islamic Azad University, whether it’s seen as a mental health problem or a deliberate statement, shows how tense things are in a bigger sense. The world is paying close attention as Iran’s government tries to figure out how to deal with this wave of resistance. They know that for many Iranian women, this is not just about the hijab; it’s a fight for freedom, respect, and rights that have been taken away for too long.
