LaLiga clubs will help raise money for people who were victim in Spain’s flash floods

LaLiga and its clubs will help the Red Cross help those hit by the flash floods in Spain that have killed at least 158 people by promoting a campaign this weekend during game broadcasts and on their social media pages.

“LaLiga sends its condolences to the families of the victims and the missing,” the Spanish football league said in a statement on Thursday.

Real Madrid said they would also work with the Red Cross and give them one million euros, which is about $1.09 million.

“The Real Madrid Foundation and the Red Cross have today launched a fundraising campaign to support those affected by the storm and the club have decide to support this campaign with a donation of one million euros to help the many families who are in a critical situation and need all our help and solidarity,” a statement from the Spanish champions said.

As a tribute to the victims, the Spanish FA called off all seven midweek Cup games and all games planned for this weekend in the eastern region of Valencia. It also asked tournament organizers to hold a minute of silence before all games that will still happen.

Six of the postponed Copa del Rey games have been moved to next week. The only game that still doesn’t have a new date is Real Sociedad’s match against Jove Espanyol in Alicante.

LaLiga told the 10 teams in the top two divisions that would be affected to come up with new dates by next Tuesday.

Valencia’s LaLiga game against Real Madrid on Saturday and Villarreal’s match against Rayo Vallecano were both postponed because Valencia opened the Mestalla stadium as a place for people to donate food and other necessities.

One dollar is equal to nine billion euros.
