FIFA is accused of not paying £3.09 million in player compensation
FIFA is said to have neglected to pay 420 players £3.09 million.
FIFA has come under fire for not paying the remaining amounts owed to players throughout Europe whose clubs failed to uphold their end of the bargain.
The remaining sum, which is due in September 2023, is still unpaid, according to sources, despite some payments having been made.
Numerous impacted players, some of whom are retired or unemployed, depend on the money from FIFA’s Player Fund, which was created in 2020 to help in these situations.
According to reports, 420 players are owed a total of £3.09 million. More than 30 players’ financial difficulties were brought to light in an email from a national union begging FIFA to release the monies.
FIFA’s payment delay coincides with an ongoing dispute over modifications to the international fixture calendar with the global players’ union, FIFPro.
The Professional Footballers’ Association-backed FIFPro contends that the 32-team Club World Cup, which will take place in the USA next summer, puts too much pressure on top players and increases their risk of injury.
FIFA’s reluctance to declare the prize money for the 2018 event or finalize television contracts has further compounded the dispute. FIFA has not yet responded to the claims or the conflict.
