Two coaches are vying to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City
The Cityzens are beginning to outline the characteristics of potential successors in light of the uncertainty surrounding Pep Guardiola’s future. The next person to have their name mentioned is Xabi Alonso, following Ruben Amorim.
When the season is over, what will Pep Guardiola do? The Spaniard’s contract with Manchester City, which runs until June 2025, obviously raises questions about his future. He recently stated, “I haven’t made a decision yet. If I had made a decision regarding my future at Manchester City, I would say so. Anything is possible in life.” This ambiguity has persisted since the end of the season when Txiki Begiristain, the Manchester club’s director of football since 2012, announced his resignation.
Guardiola came to City thanks to Begiristain. Because of their strong relationship, some believe that the former FC Barcelona coach may be persuaded to leave. To where, though? Now that England has selected Thomas Tuchel as its new coach (effective 2025), the topic is raised. That his club is covering its back is still a fact.
Amorim and Alonso followed
Additionally, Defensa Central claims that the Skyblues would target Xabi Alonso, a coach that Real Madrid has their eye on. Since winning the Bundesliga the previous season, the Bayer Leverkusen technician’s stock has skyrocketed. The position for Real Madrid is straightforward. In 2026, Carlo Ancelotti will be free, and if he doesn’t extend by then, naturally, Alonso, whose contract with Bayer expires that year, is supposed to take his place.
The Merengues’ intentions could thus be derailed by Manchester City, particularly if Xabi Alonso is the perfect coach to succeed Guardiola. But it’s important to keep in mind that Ruben Amorim, another coach, is also in a strong position. In fact, there is a good probability that Sporting Portugal’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, will take Begiristain’s place. As you are aware, Viana would prefer to arrive in England with the Leões coach in his luggage if he gets appointed. The story is just getting started. Unless Pep Guardiola quickly extends his contract to get everyone on board.
