Egypt’s health ministry reports that a bus accident has left at least 12 people dead and 33 injured

According to the Egyptian health ministry, a bus overturned on a highway that connects Cairo to the Red Sea coast Monday, killing at least 12 people and injuring 33 more.

According to a statement, 28 ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the collision, which happened on the Al-Galala route that links Cairo with coastal communities around the Red Sea, including Ain Sokhna.

Students from Galala University, one of the government’s nationwide initiatives in the Suez governorate, based in Galala City, were engaged in the accident, according to domestic media, including the state-owned Al-Ahram daily.

On its website, the privately held pro-state Sada al-Balad news channel stated that preliminary inquiries had found the bus driver was speeding and had lost control of the vehicle.

According to a report released in 2022 by the statistics agency CAPMAS, 7,101 individuals died in road accidents in Egypt in 2021, a 15.2% rise from 2020.
