The Nigerian police have successfully rescued six members of the SuperSport personnel who were abducted

On Friday, Nigerian police announced that they had successfully rescued a media crew that was abducted in the southeast while en route to cover an Africa Cup of Nations match between Nigeria and Libya in Akwa Ibom state.

The government has attributed the violence in the southeastern region of Nigeria to a secessionist group that is advocating for the secession of a region where the majority of the population is Igbo.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson for Anambra state, reported that the crew, which is employed by South African broadcaster Supersport, was abducted by armed men on Wednesday while traveling through the state, which is known for its high levels of separatist violence.

The media contingent was en route from Lagos.

“Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while travelling from Lagos to Uyo along Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala,” Ikenga reported.

Ikenga also stated that a rescue operation for a seventh crew member was currently underway.

The incident was not promptly addressed by Supersport.
Security agents and government officials are frequently the targets of gunmen in the southeast.
