The final member of the “Big Four,” Djokovic, continues to compete

Novak Djokovic, the final surviving member of tennis’ “Big Four,” stated that he has no intention of retiring in the near future. However, he acknowledged that the retirement of his competitors Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafa Nadal has been overwhelming.

Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, and Murray were collectively referred to as the “Big Four” during a period of dominance in which they secured a total of 69 Grand Slam titles and participated in some of the most memorable matches of the past two decades.

Nadal, who has won a record 14 French Open titles, announced on Thursday that he will retire from the sport following the Davis Cup next month. Federer retired in 2022, while Murray retired following the Paris Olympics of this year.

On Friday, following his victory over Czech Jakub Mensik in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, Djokovic said, “Nadal has been my greatest rival.” The most significant influence on my career has been the rivalry I shared with him.

“We were aware that the moment would arrive sooner rather than later; however, it remains a surprise.”

“A few years ago, Roger announced his retirement, and Andy followed suit this year.” To be frank, it is somewhat overwhelming for me. I am uncertain as to how to interpret it. I continue to derive pleasure from competing. However, they took a significant portion of me with them.

SEMI-LOOMS

The Serb was pressed hard but fought back to secure the victory in his 6-7 (4) 6-1 6-4 victory over Mensik, who was born over a year after Djokovic played his first match on the ATP Tour in 2004.

It guaranteed his advancement to a record-extending 78th ATP Masters 1000 semi-final, which is two more than Nadal.

“These types of matches, against teenagers, are something that truly inspires me,” Djokovic stated to reporters following the victory.

“It motivates me to persevere and to delve deeply, demonstrating to the world that I still have the stamina to compete with the younger men.”

“I’m super glad that I managed to win this very challenging match.”

On Saturday, Djokovic will face Taylor Fritz, the seventh-ranked player in the world, in the semi-finals. Fritz defeated Belgian David Goffin 6-3, 6-4 on Friday.

“I must prepare for another challenging match, Fritz, as I will be facing a formidable server tomorrow,” stated the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
“Quick conditions are a significant advantage if you serve well.”

“We are entering the last couple of matches of the tournament, and now is the time for me to really try to step it up even more, and hopefully I can get a chance to be in the finals.”
