France will hold a conference on Lebanon on October 24
France’s foreign ministry said that on Oct. 24, an international cabinet conference will be held to talk about the crisis in Lebanon. The conference will focus on the political situation there and how to help people in need as tensions rise between Israel and Hezbollah.
“Its objective will be to mobilize the international community to respond to the protection and emergency relief needs of the Lebanese population and to identify ways of supporting Lebanon’s institutions, in particular the Lebanese Armed Forces, which are the guarantors of the country’s internal stability,” the ministry said in a Wednesday statement.
The Israeli government has not been invited, and it was not clear if other Lebanese politicians would be asked as well.
Paris has a history with Lebanon and has been working with the US to try to get the fighting to stop in the Middle Eastern country.
At the end of September, Israel dropped heavy bombs on the southern areas of Beirut, killing Hassan Nasrallah, who had been the leader of Hezbollah for a long time. This stopped the talks.
After that, it started a ground assault that forced thousands of people to leave their homes.
Lebanon’s foreign ministry said that the meeting would include partners from around the world and in the region, as well as partners from civil society.
France will remind everyone at this conference of how important it is for hostilities to end and for a diplomatic solution to be found as soon as possible because of a serious and deep political and humanitarian disaster. It also said that choosing a president should be the first step.
