A Portuguese prisoner who escaped was caught in Morocco, but four others are still on the run

One of the five prisoners who escaped from a high-security jail near Lisbon a month ago has been caught in Morocco, Portuguese police said on Monday. The other four prisoners, who are all foreigners, are still on the run.

Fabio Loureiro, 33, was arrested in Tangier by Moroccan police late on Sunday.

Police say he will be brought before a judge in Morocco before being sent to Portugal to finish his 25-year jail sentence for armed robbery, drug trafficking, extortion, and other crimes.

On September 7, the five prisoners got out of Vale de Judeus jail while the guards were busy with visitors. An accomplice on the outside gave them a long ladder to help them.

The jail guards’ union has been complaining for a long time that the prison, which can hold 560 inmates, doesn’t have enough staff or security, especially since the watchtowers were taken down and video surveillance was put in their place.
