At Barcelona, Szczesny emerges from retirement to serve as Ter Stegen’s replacement due to his injury

Barcelona announced on Wednesday that they have signed Wojciech Szczesny as a free agent. This decision was made after the Polish goalkeeper decided to reconsider his retirement and assist the team in the aftermath of Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s long-term injury.

The German goalkeeper, Ter Stegen, underwent surgery on his right knee after experiencing a rupture of the patella tendon over the weekend. It is anticipated that he will be unable to participate in the remainder of the season.

Inaki Pena, 25, is anticipated to serve as Ter Stegen’s replacement; however, Barcelona has since bolstered their roster with Szczesny, who declared his retirement last month after terminating his contract with Juventus (Serie A).

The 34-year-old former Poland international was still under contract at Juve for one additional year. He had succeeded the legendary Gianluigi Buffon in the goal, who was from Italy.

In more than 250 appearances for Juve, Szczesny won the league and domestic cup three times each. However, he was replaced by close-season recruit Michele Di Gregorio.

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona will make their next visit to Deportivo Alaves on Sunday, and they currently hold the lead in the LaLiga standings with 21 points from eight games.
