Raphaël Varane announces his retirement from the Professional Soccer

Raphael Varane declared his retirement from professional football in a statement released on Wednesday, just a few weeks after joining Serie A team Como.

This past Wednesday, the French national team’s 2018 world champion declared his retirement from professional football. This choice is the result of a very serious injury he had to his left knee on August 11, during the Italian Cup round of 32 match against Sampdoria Genoa (1-1 and 3-4 on penalties). This was just a few weeks after he joined Como, a team coached by Cesc Fàbregas that was promoted to Serie A.

The Lille native, who had training at Racing Club de Lens, joined Real Madrid in 2011. He competed in 360 games for the Merengues while playing in Spain, winning 17 championships, including three Ligas (2012, 2017 and 2020) and three Champions Leagues (2014, 2016 and 2017). In March 2013, he also learned about the French team, in addition to his Madrid journey. 93 times, he would don the blue jersey that helped him win the 2018 World Cup. In December 2018, he quit the selection, physically and mentally spent. In 2022, he made his club debut with Manchester United and England. An injury-plagued two-season journey that came to an end this summer. Finally, Como would be the place where his career ended.

“I have grasped every chance and confronted numerous obstacles throughout my career, nearly all of which were thought to be unattainable. Amazing feelings, unique experiences, and enduring memories. After thinking back on these times, I can say that I’m retiring from the game that we all love with a great sense of pride and success,” the athlete added.
