Kamala Harris and Oprah Winfrey will conduct a virtual event targeting battleground states

U.S. Democratic presidential contender Kamala Harris will participate in an online event with celebrity billionaire Oprah Winfrey on Thursday, aimed at mobilizing support among grassroots organizations in pivotal states.

The “Unite for America” event, co-hosted by Winfrey and the activist organization Win with Black Women, seeks to register voters and support Harris in pivotal areas including Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Michigan, which will influence the November 5 election.

Harris and Winfrey will broadcast the 8 p.m. EDT (0000 GMT) event via livestream on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok from Michigan, where Harris has been campaigning in the Detroit region, according to local media reports.

Numerous grassroots organizations, such as Latinas for Harris, Win With Black Men, and Republicans for Harris, are involved. Win with Black Women advocates for the election of Black women to public office. Harris is of Black descent and possesses South Asian ancestry.

According to a Unite for America press release, the groups that have supported Harris since her campaign’s inception in July have contributed over $20 million to her fundraising efforts.

“What is paramount to me is inspiring individuals to vote and ensuring that everyone formulates a plan not only for themselves but also for their families and friends,” stated Winfrey, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former television anchor.

A recent Reuters survey indicated that Harris surpassed her Republican rival Donald Trump, garnering 47% compared to his 42%.

According to polling averages from aggregator FiveThirtyEight, Harris led in the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, and North Carolina, whilst Trump garnered more support in Georgia. They are in a deadlock in Arizona.

On Thursday, Trump will attend a Washington event focused on combating antisemitism and will speak at the Israeli American Council Summit.

Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal and endorsement of Harris as the Democratic candidate, 90,000 Black women participated in a call organized by Win with Black Women, which collected $1.5 million in three hours, according to the press release.

In August, Winfrey addressed the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to advocate for Harris.

“I urge all independents and undecided voters,” Winfrey stated, identifying herself as an independent voter. “Decency and respect will be at stake in the 2024 election.”
