FA accuse Bentancur of Spurs of making a racist comment regarding Son
Rodrigo Bentancur, a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur, has been charged by the Football Association after he made a racist comment regarding South Koreans while discussing his teammate Son Heung-min on television.
Bentancur, 27, has until September 19 to address the accusation.
After receiving backlash for his remarks earlier in June, Bentancur issued an apology, which Son accepted. “Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive,” Bentancur said. Nothing has changed at all; we are brothers,” Son remarked.
During an interview with the Uruguayan television show Por La Camiseta, Bentancur was asked for a Spurs player’s shirt. He said, “Sonny’s?” and added, “It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
The governing body said in a statement on Thursday, “It’s alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought into disrepute.”
Bentancur’s remarks, according to the FA, constituted a “aggravated breach… as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.”
