Brazilian club Corinthians has signed Dutch striker Depay
The Brazilian club, Corinthians, has announced that Dutch striker Memphis Depay has signed a two-year contract with the club after departing Atletico Madrid as a free agent in July.
Although the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, local media outlets reported that the contract would be valued at 70 million Brazilian reals ($12.54 million).
Although the 30-year-old has scored 46 goals in 98 appearances for the Netherlands, he was excluded from the squad for this month’s Nations League contests. Germany will be the opponent for Ronald Koeman’s team on Tuesday, following their 5-2 victory over Bosnia on Saturday.
Koeman has confirmed that Depay’s transfer to Brazil will not impede his prospect of appearing for the national team, indicating that his international career is far from over.
“I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn’s relocation to Saudi Arabia; however, Memphis may prove to be an exception,” Koeman informed reporters on Monday.
“The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his fitness and if he reaches his level.”
At PSV Eindhoven, Depay initiated his professional career. He has since played for Barcelona, Manchester United, and Olympique Lyon. His nine goals were scored in 31 appearances across all competitions for Atletico Madrid last season.
