Trump will enter a not guilty plea to the allegations in the updated US indictment

In a new indictment accusing him of trying to overturn his election defeat in 2020, former US President Donald Trump said in a court filing on Tuesday that he would enter a not guilty plea.

Trump, the Republican nominee for president on November 5th, gave his attorneys permission to file the plea in lieu of exercising his right to appear in court.

The same four accusations that prosecutors filed against Trump in 2017 are included in the updated indictment that Special Counsel Jack Smith got last week. He was charged with trying to steal the election from Congress, manipulate the results, and deny Americans the opportunity to cast a fair ballot.

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that President Trump has wide immunity from criminal prosecution for official conduct taken while in office, the new indictment reframed and omitted some of the original allegations.

Trump entered a not guilty plea to the allegations in the initial indictment when he appeared in federal court in Washington, D.C., in August 2023.

To decide what to do after the Supreme Court’s immunity decision, prosecutors and Trump’s attorneys are expected to appear in court on Thursday.
