The DR Congo government has reported that 129 individuals were slain in an attempt to escape from a prison

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo informed the public that at least 129 individuals were slain while attempting to escape the central Makala prison in the capital, Kinshasa, early on Monday. They also stated that the situation has been resolved.

The jail’s administrative facility, food depots, and hospital were also the sites of a fire, according to Interior Minister Shabani Lukoo, in a statement that was published on X early on Tuesday. Additionally, he stated that approximately 59 individuals became injured.

In the video statement, he stated that the mass escape attempt at Makala central prison resulted in the loss of life and substantial material damage.
An official from the prison had previously stated that no prisoners had been able to escape, and that those who attempted to do so had been slain. The government was conducting an investigation into the incident.

Breakout attempts were made on Monday at approximately 2:00 a.m. (0100 GMT). As well as the noises of prisoners outside, prisoners reported to Reuters that they had heard heavy gunfire.
