Nigeria demands the arrest of a British national involved in protests

A Nigerian court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for two Nigerians and a British national who the police are attempting to accuse with inciting the army and treason in the wake of last month’s inflation protests.

Nigeria accused ten individuals on Monday of treason and plotting to provoke a military rebellion. All of the defendants refuted the allegations that are connected to the demonstrations.

The warrant against Andrew Martin Wynne, a British national, and two locals, Lucky Elis Obiyari and Abdullahi Musa, was issued by a judge.

“Being the masterminds and coordinators of the recent attempt to destabilize Nigeria and cause the overthrow of the present democratically elected government,” according to an affidavit police filed with the court, they were charged.

It was not possible to get a response from the three right away.

Although they left Nigeria to avoid being arrested, police said they would like assistance from Interpol.

Protesters faced the worst economic suffering in a century, and government critics stated that charging them with treason was a severe measure. They also accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of trying to stifle dissent.
