Kelly Rowland expresses her disappointment with Netflix’s Building the Band show, stating that it was not her idea

The upcoming singing competition series tracks aspiring performers as they come together to create a band without ever meeting in person.

Kelly Rowland is returning to the world of reality TV singing competitions, but this time with a unique twist.

After appearing on popular talent shows such as The X Factor and The Voice, the accomplished Grammy winner, who is 43 years old, is now preparing to take on a judging position on Netflix’s upcoming show, Building the Band. This unique twist on the format will bring aspiring musicians together to form a group, all without ever meeting in person, similar to the concepts of Love Is Blind or The Circle.

“I’m a bit disappointed that it wasn’t my idea,” Rowland tells PEOPLE with a chuckle, discussing Building the Band in an interview about her collaboration with Pepsi for the Local Eats with Pepsi campaign. “I’ve had experience with a similar process in the past, but I must say, this is quite impressive.”

The former member of Destiny’s Child will be joining Liam Payne and Nicole Scherzinger as a judge for the series. Scherzinger will also be serving as a mentor for the competition, while AJ McLean will take on the role of host. All the celebrities featured on the show have been in groups themselves and share personal connections with one another.

“AJ reminded me that we toured together in the past.” Whenever I see Nicole, she’s always incredibly kind, and Liam never fails to make me laugh. I had no idea about his sense of humor, so I’m taking the time to get to know him better, and he’s really impressive,” says Rowland.

As an enthusiastic viewer of Love Is Blind, the “Dilemma” singer is excited to be a part of Building the Band and get an up-close experience of Netflix’s distinctive style of reality TV. “I believe that the reason why individuals will resonate with this specific idea and platform is because it remains genuinely authentic,” she explains.

“They’re utilizing their senses in a similar manner as they do in Love Is Blind. Uncertainty is an inherent part of life, isn’t it? According to Rowland, anything in life can be a daring and risky endeavor, with the potential for great success or terrible outcomes. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this.”

Production for the series is scheduled to commence this summer, and viewers can anticipate the reveal of more guest judges and exciting challenges in due course. No specific date has been determined for the premiere yet.

While working with other aspiring performers to make their dreams come true on Building the Band, the Mea Culpa is fully aware that her own fan base is eagerly anticipating new music. “It’s on its way,” she playfully hints — without revealing too many details.

“The music that I’m working on is feeling really great,” says Rowland, whose last full-length album, Talk a Good Game, was released in 2013. After a year, she and her husband Tim Weatherspoon joyfully welcomed their first son, Titan Jewell. Their family grew even more in 2021 with the arrival of their second son, Noah Jon. “It’s high time for another album.”

Rowland is being cautious about revealing too many details about the process until the music is ready. “I’m in a position where I believe that being overly verbose is unnecessary,” she remarks. “I would prefer for it to simply materialize.”
