Elon Musk is threatened with platform suspension unless he appoints an X representative in Brazil

Elon Musk is facing suspension unless he designates a legal agent for X in Brazil, as mandated by the Brazilian Supreme Court.

Billionaire Elon Musk was given a 24-hour deadline by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday to choose a legal representation for his social networking platform X in Brazil.

Should you disregard this directive, the platform may be suspended nationwide.

The choice was made in response to recent hostilities between Brazilian authorities and Musk’s business. X, formerly known as Twitter, declared earlier this month that it will be shutting down and firing employees in Brazil.

The company informed customers that the site will still be available in Brazil even with the operational closure, but it primarily blamed “censorship orders” from Moraes as the basis for its decision.

In a daring move, the Supreme Court directly tagged Elon Musk and X’s Global Government Affairs accounts in a screenshot of Moraes’ decision that it shared on its official X account. The court’s decision draws attention to the developing conflict between Musk’s platform and Brazil’s legal system. The platform has found itself in conflict with national laws in a number of different nations.

Judge Moraes stressed that businesses operating in Brazil must abide by local regulations. He is well-known for taking a strong stand on upholding the country’s internet control laws.

The ruling particularly cited Brazilian law that governs internet-related activities and stated that any business that violates these rules or the privacy of personal data may have its services temporarily suspended in Brazil.

Following the billionaire’s purchase of the platform, Musk’s X has faced numerous legal challenges, the most recent of which being Moraes’ decision. The decision to designate a legal representation in Brazil is indicative of the nation’s determination to continue regulating foreign IT companies doing business there.

As of this writing, neither X nor the corporation has issued an official statement in response to the court’s ruling. Outside of typical business hours, requests for comments are still not returned.

The resolution of this legal dispute may have a big impact on X’s prospects in Brazil, one of the most important markets in Latin America.

If the platform is taken offline, this would be a significant turning point in the continuing battle between national governments and multinational internet corporations over the enforcement of national laws in the digital sphere.
