Nigeria’s Defense Chief Musa pays a visit to the leaders of Niger Junta to discuss potential collaboration on security matters

Nigeria’s defense chief Musa recently held a meeting with his counterpart from Niger Republic, General Barmo, to discuss the enhancement of military cooperation and regional security.

In a bid to enhance cooperation between Nigeria and Niger Republic, General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, is paying a visit to the military junta. The focus of this visit is to address the issue of insecurity in the region.

General Musa was greeted by the Nigerien Defence Chief, General Mousa Salou Barmo.

During the visit, the aim is to promote the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the military junta in Niger Republic and countries in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This comes after the bloodless coup in 2023, which resulted in the military assuming control of the country.

As of March 2024, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to open Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger and lift other sanctions against the country, effective immediately.

The directive was in accordance with the decisions made by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during its extraordinary summit in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
