Man Utd defender Evans has announced his retirement from Northern Ireland
Jonny Evans, the captain of Northern Ireland, has declared his imminent retirement from international football.
Evans, 36, made his international début against Spain in September 2006 and subsequently appeared in 107 matches.
Steve Davis, Pat Jennings, and Aaron Hughes are the only individuals to surpass this record for Northern Ireland.
The Manchester United defender stated, “My greatest honor has been the opportunity to represent the people of Northern Ireland by donning the green shirt 107 times.”
Evans played in all four of Northern Ireland’s matches at Euro 2016, their first international tournament in 30 years.
The player stated: “Without doubt the highlight of my international career has been the Euros in France 2016, reaching a major tournament and representing our wee country was a dream come true.”
Evans’ retirement occurs seven months after Davis, the current record holder in terms of caps, announced his retirement from the professional game. Manager Michael O’Neill is scheduled to announce his team for the upcoming Nations League games against Bulgaria and Luxembourg on Thursday.
