Izquierdo passed away at a local Brazilian hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 27, five days after he collapsed during a Copa Libertadores game in São Paulo, as reported by The Associated Press.

According to a statement from Hospital Albert Einstein, Izquierdo passed away at 9:38 p.m. local time due to cardiorespiratory arrest related to his cardiac arrhythmia, as reported by the AP.

According to a statement from doctors at the hospital on Monday, Aug. 26, Izquierdo, who had been on a ventilator before his passing, was transferred to neurological critical care due to elevated intracranial pressure, as reported by the AP.

X (formerly known as Twitter) was used by the Uruguayan soccer club to share a heartfelt message of remembrance for Izquierdo.

According to the AP, the São Paulo soccer club also released a statement about Izquierdo’s tragic passing. They expressed their grief and sorrow upon hearing the news of Juan Izquierdo’s death, after days of prayer, unity, and hope. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, teammates, Nacional fans, and all the Uruguayan people during this difficult time.

Izquierdo embarked on his professional soccer journey in 2018, and by 2023, he successfully guided the Uruguayan league to a historic championship victory, ending the club’s century-long title drought.
