Germany will provide 100,000 doses of the mpox vaccine to address the outbreak in Africa

Germany will donate 100,000 mpox vaccine doses from its military stockpiles to assist the affected countries in the short term and contain the outbreak on the African continent, according to a government spokesperson on Monday.

The government will provide the World Health Organization with flexible financial resources through a variety of instruments to combat mpox. Additionally, the GAVI vaccination alliance will provide support to the organization’s partners in Africa. Added the spokesperson.

Jynneos, which Berlin acquired in 2022, is currently being stockpiled by the German army, with approximately 117,000 doses present.

A spokesperson for the defense ministry stated on Monday that it will maintain a minimal stock to safeguard traveling authorities. In addition, he stated that a distinct decision would be required regarding the reordering of vaccines.

An outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread to neighboring countries, prompting the World Health Organization to declare mpox a global public health emergency. Additionally, the rapidity of transmission has been a source of concern, as a new strain of the virus, clade Ib, has been identified.

A spokesperson for the foreign ministry stated that the government was investigating the most expeditious method of delivering the immunizations to the affected countries, which included the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and neighboring East African nations.
