The Malawi Electoral Commission has implemented new technology in preparation for the 2025 elections

The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has implemented Electoral Management Devices (EMDs) to optimize the electoral processes for the upcoming general elections in September 2025.

Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the spokesperson for the Mec, announced on Wednesday that the electoral body has acquired a total of 6,500 EMDs from the Netherlands-based Smartmatic International Holding B V Company.

In the 2019 general elections and the 2020 re-run of the presidential election, the Biometric Voter Registration system will be replaced by the new technology.

Voter registration, voter transfer management, and voter register inspection are anticipated to be conducted by the commission through the implementation of the new system.

According to Mwafulirwa, the Mec’s strategy to improve the efficiency of electoral procedures during the forthcoming general elections includes the implementation of EMDs.
