Ikeda, the coach of the Japanese women’s team, leaves at the conclusion of his contract

Futoshi Ikeda has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Japanese women’s team as a result of the Japan Football Association’s refusal to extend his contract following the team’s quarterfinal exit at the Olympics.

The Nadeshiko, who were led by the 53-year-old to the last eight at the Women’s World Cup last year, were unable to improve on their performance in Paris earlier this month. They were defeated 1-0 in extra time by the eventual gold medalists, the United States.

Ikeda expressed his appreciation to the players and personnel who have supported Nadeshiko Japan and the supporters who have cheered them on in a JFA news release on Wednesday.

“I am of the opinion that we have expanded and enhanced our collective capabilities.” I aspired to achieve even greater heights as Nadeshiko Japan and explore the future in collaboration with the participants.

“I hope that Nadeshiko Japan will continue to deliver courage and inspiration to many people.”

Before assuming responsibility for the senior team following their quarterfinal exit at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Ikeda led Japan to the Asian under-19 title in 2017 and the under-20 team to a world championship in 2018.

Despite the fact that there were some high points during his tenure, particularly the 4-0 thrashing of eventual champions Spain in the World Cup group stage last year, he was unable to match the ambition of a nation that had reveled in the 2011 World Cup triumph.

“The management of Coach Ikeda has fostered a sense of unity among the team, and they have demonstrated how to prevail in challenging situations on numerous occasions,” stated Miyamoto Tsuneyasu, the head of the Japan Football Association.

“I believe that the players who have gained experience under coach Ikeda will further develop Japanese women’s soccer in the future.”
