Five Kenyan police officers have been indicted for the breakout of a suspected serial murderer from prison

Five Kenyan police officers were arraigned on Wednesday on charges of aiding a suspected serial murderer and 12 others in evading a police station in the capital, Nairobi, according to court documents.

Prosecutors requested that the court incarcerate the police officers who were on duty during Tuesday’s prison break for a period of two weeks to enable the officers to conclude an investigation into their possible involvement.

It was requested by the prosecution that the court grant them additional time to gather statements, review CCTV footage, and investigate the phones of the police officers.

One of the escapees was Collins Jumaisi, who was apprehended last month for the murder of at least six women. The corpses of the women were discovered in a former quarry that is currently utilized as a rubbish dump. The bodies were wrapped in plastic bags.

According to the police, Jumaisi confessed to the murder of 42 women, including his wife. However, his attorney informed the court that he was subjected to extreme torture in order to make the confession. It is denied by the prosecution that he was subjected to mistreatment.

On Tuesday, the police announced that preliminary investigations had revealed that insiders had assisted in the escape. They also announced that they had initiated a manhunt to recapture the escapees.

A police report obtained by Reuters indicated that Jumaisi and 12 Eritrean nationals were discovered missing from their cell at approximately 05:00 (0200 GMT) on Tuesday. It is believed that they fled by cutting through a wire mesh covering the window in their cell.
