The United States claims that Iran’s cyber operations were directed at the campaigns of Trump and Harris

The United States accuses Iran of conducting cyber operations against the campaigns of both U.S. presidential candidates and targeting the American public with influence operations that are intended to incite political discord. This accusation was made on Monday.

“We have observed an increase in the level of aggression from Iran during this election cycle,” stated a joint statement from the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which is responsible for the protection of government computer systems.

The FBI investigation was initiated by claims made by the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump that Iran had hacked one of its websites earlier this month, which were subsequently confirmed by the statement.

Trump stated at that time that Iran was only able to obtain information that was publicly available.

Iran, according to the U.S. statement, has also targeted the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is scheduled to officially accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination at the convention this week.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations issued a statement in which it accused the allegations of being “unsubstantiated and devoid of any standing.” The Islamic Republic of Iran has neither the intention nor the motivation to interfere with the U.S. presidential election, as we have previously stated.

Iran has engaged in “cyber operations targeting presidential campaigns” and influence operations targeting the American public in an effort to incite political divisions, according to the U.S. statement.

“This includes the recently reported activities to compromise former President Trump’s campaign, which the IC (intelligence community) attributes to Iran,” the statement continued.

The intelligence community is certain that Iranian operatives, through social engineering and other methods, “attempted to gain access to individuals who had direct involvement in the presidential campaigns of both parties,” according to the statement.

The statement further stated that these activities included robberies and disclosures “designed to sway the U.S. election process,” without providing further details.
