The Japanese Prime Minister, Kishida, intends to visit the United States in late September, according to Yomiuri
The Yomiuri newspaper reported on Saturday that the departure of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is imminent, as he is in the process of finalizing arrangements to visit the United States in late September for the U.N. General Assembly and a potential meeting with President Joe Biden.
The report cited numerous government sources and indicated that the visit may commence on Sept. 22 and last for several days. However, the sources were not identified.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry acknowledged that “nothing has been decided yet” in response to a Reuters inquiry.
Kishida will resign as prime minister upon the conclusion of his tenure as party leader in late September, as he withdrew from the leadership contest for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Wednesday.
The date of the LDP election has not yet been determined. The Yomiuri reports that Kishida may address the General Assembly as early as Sept. 20, following the selection of his successor as prime minister by Japan’s parliament, where the LDP holds a majority.
According to the newspaper, there are individuals within the Japanese government who believe that it would be advantageous for Kishida’s successor to avoid forging intimate relationships with Biden, who is scheduled to conclude his tenure in January.
Vice President Kamala Harris succeeded Biden as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee last month, after the former withdrew from the November election. Former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, is her opponent.
