Kansas City Current signs The Kenyan midfielder, Mwanalima Adam Jereko
The acquisition of Mwanalima Adam Jereko was announced by The Kansas City Current. The Kenya National Team captain and Turkish Women’s Super League star, who is simply known as Jereko, has entered into a contract with the club that will extend through the 2025 season, with an option for the 2026 season.
Jereko expressed his eagerness to perform for the Current in Kansas City. “The organization has been incredibly supportive of me, and I am extremely enthusiastic about joining this club.”
The 26-year-old midfielder has played a crucial role in the development of women’s football in Kenya, assisting the nation in reaching its inaugural CECAFA Women’s Championship finals in 2019. Jereko was initially selected for the U-17 junior team in 2015. He transitioned to the senior national team shortly thereafter and has since represented Kenya in all significant tournaments, including the most recent 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. She has nearly ten years of experience with the national squad and is one of the undisputed leaders of the Harambee Starlets.
Vlatko Andonovski, the head coach, stated, “Jereko is an exciting player who will be an excellent fit here.” “Her work ethic, skill, and enthusiasm are precisely what we are seeking as we transition back into the regular season.”
Early in her career, the devastating striker achieved notoriety and was given the appellation “Dogo.” She commenced her professional career in high school with the Mombasa Olympic females, and her tenure with Thika Queens FC, a Kenyan Premier League team, commenced in 2018. After an undefeated season with the Thika Queens, she became the league’s leading scorer in 2021.
Later that year, she transferred to Hakkarigücü Spor of the Turkish Super League. In her initial 17 games with the club, Jereko scored 11 goals, which contributed to the team’s fourth-place finish. In 2023, the all-star was appointed as the squad’s commander. Jereko has joined the Current after netting 23 goals, including two hat tricks, with the Turkish club last season.
Kansas City will resume regular season play on August 25 against the Washington Spirit in Washington D.C. at 11 a.m. CT, following the conclusion of the Current’s International Summer of Soccer.
