In Turkey, lawmakers engage in a physical altercation during a parliamentary debate regarding a colleague who is currently incarcerated. Blood is shed

During the parliament debate on an incarcerated colleague, Turkish lawmakers are involved in a physical altercation that results in the shedding of blood.

On Friday, a brawl ensued among Turkish legislators during a contentious discussion regarding an opposition delegate who is presently held in custody on charges that are widely regarded as politically motivated.

Ahmet Sik, a representative from the same party as the jailed deputy, was assaulted by a lawmaker from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s governing party while speaking on the chamber’s lectern, according to footage released by a lawmaker.

Sik had recently referred to the members of the governing party as a “terrorist organization.”

A female lawmaker was injured during a subsequent altercation that involved numerous deputies, resulting in blood stains on the steps leading to the speaker’s lectern.

Additionally, it was reported that an additional opposition member sustained injuries.

The Grand National Assembly convened an extraordinary session to address the matter of Can Atalay, a parliamentary deputy for the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) who was elected from prison in the previous year’s election.

He had been sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment the previous year for his involvement in anti-government protests in 2013, which challenged the authority of Erdogan, the then prime minister of Turkey.

Atalay has been striving to secure his membership in parliament, which would grant him immunity from prosecution and enable him to be released from Marmara prison, since he was elected.

He has declared that he intends to return to prison upon the conclusion of his sentence.

The parliamentary session’s resumption date was not promptly determined.
