Alvarez departs Manchester City to join Atletico Madrid

The LaLiga club announced on Monday that Julian Alvarez, an Argentine forward, has been recruited by Atletico Madrid on a six-year contract from Premier League side Manchester City.

The financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club. However, British media reported that the transaction was valued at approximately 75 million euros ($82 million) with an additional 20 million euros in potential add-ons.

“I bid farewell to this exceptional club today with a plethora of emotions.” They were two years that were exceedingly significant. Throughout this period, I experienced significant personal and professional development,” Alvarez stated on Instagram.

Manchester City will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I will always be extremely proud to have been a member of this family. I extend my best wishes for your future success and will remain committed to the institution, regardless of my location.

City has achieved a record sale price with the 24-year-old Argentina international’s departure, surpassing the 50 million pounds Chelsea paid for winger Raheem Sterling in 2022.

In 2022, Alvarez signed with City from Argentine club River Plate for a fee of 14 million pounds. He has since scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for manager Pep Guardiola’s team.

He has won the Premier League twice, as well as the Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup each once. He was also the victor of the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and the Copa America earlier this year.

Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, had been in pursuit of a centre forward since Alvaro Morata’s transfer to AC Milan last month.
