South African Singer Tyla Condemns Chidimma Adetshina’s Bullying Of Former Miss SA Contestant
Tyla has denounced the way Chidimma Adetshina was treated during Miss SA pageant incident, therefore opposing bullying among South Africans.
Speaking in favor of former Miss SA Pageant competitor Chidinma Adetshina, South African musician Tyla has denounced the abuse Adetshina has experienced from South Africans after controversies around her.
After advancing to the round of 16, Adetshina, 23-year-old model of Nigerian and Mozambican background who just withdrew from the Miss South Africa contest, attracted major attention on social media due of her nationality. This set to a furious argument about her eligibility for the national beauty contest.
Chidimma, who was born in Soweto, South Africa, from a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, went under close examination for her involvement in the contest. Many on social media—especially from South Africa—called for her disqualification, challenging her national identification. The South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) responded by looking into her nationality, which generated more debate.
The DHA said on Wednesday that early data indicated Chidimma’s mother could have engaged in identity theft and fraud, therefore casting more questions on Chidimma’s eligibility. After this disclosure, Chidimma chose to drop out of the Miss South Africa contest citing personal safety issues for her family and herself.
Known for her famous song “Water,,” Tyla posted on her X (previously Twitter) account on Saturday expressing her dismay at the treatment of Chidimma. Tyla promised her allegiance to South Africa, although she denounced the abuse Chidimma experienced, saying, “I will always stand with South Africa.” I simply believe regardless of the views; she was bullied and that is what I do not support.
Tyla urged Chidimma to be strong and keep following her aspirations, thereby expressing her support for her even in the middle of turmoil. “Disappointed that this occurred to her; but, wish you all the best daughter. Kill it!! She wrote.
But other South Africans objected to Tyla’s remarks, claiming the Grammy-winning singer misrepresented her nation. Tyla was steadfast in her opposition to bullying and in her support of Chidimma in face of criticism.
Just one day after Chidimma withdrew from the South African competition, Miss Universe Nigeria shockingly invited her to take part in their 2024 contest. For Chidimma, this invitation marks the beginning of a new chapter providing a chance to promote her Nigerian background internationally.
