On Friday, August 9, the U.S. women’s basketball team defeated Australia to win their semifinal game and guarantee a position in Sunday’s gold medal match. Vanessa, 42, watched the action from courtside with her daughters Natalia, 21, Bianka, 7, and Capri, 5.

With a nearly double-digit advantage for the most of the game, the Bryant family witnessed Team USA win 84-64. For a chance at winning an eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal, they will face the victor of the following semifinal match between hometown favorites France and Belgium.

Before Kobe Bryant passed away, Sabrina Ionescu, a WNBA player and Olympian, considered Vanessa and Natalia to be close friends. Ionescu and Bianka played basketball during the Bryants’ recent trip to New York City, and Vanessa and Natalia were there during Ionescu’s wedding in March, demonstrating their regular support for one another.

Following the game, Ionescu spoke with PEOPLE how much she enjoyed having her family around to support her.

“I knew they were going to be here watching the Olympics, supporting me, and that’s always really exciting,” she continued. “They always come, whether it’s near or far, to be able to support, and I’m obviously very excited about that.”

Since the sport’s inclusion in the 1976 Olympics, the U.S. women’s basketball team has dominated all competitions. Their streak of 60 consecutive game wins began on Friday, and they have already won nine of the 12 available golds, including seven in a row.

They intend to “go up a notch for us to be able to win a gold medal” on Sunday, and Ionescu told media, including PEOPLE, that “anything can happen” in the Olympics.

Numerous celebrities crowded the court to support the Bryants in addition to them. Partway through, Natalia changed seats to sit next to her fiancée, former USWNT player Megan Rapinoe, who has already won gold and bronze medals in the Olympics, and retired WNBA great Sue Bird, who has won five of those seven consecutive golds. While all was going on, Vanessa was seated next to South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, who led Bird and the 2020 Olympic team to victory in Tokyo.

Men’s basketball players Bam Adebayo and Kevin Durant, who will compete for gold against France on Saturday, and former NBA player Carmelo Anthony were seated on the opposite end of the row.

On the last day of the Paris Games, Sunday, August 11, at 9:30 a.m. ET, the American women’s basketball team will compete for gold.
