Egyptian wrestler accused of sexual assault is detained in Paris

The Paris prosecutor’s office reported that early on Friday morning, Egyptian Olympic wrestler was detained by French police outside a cafe he had visited in the French city on suspicion of sexual assault.

Prosecutors stated in a statement that an inquiry had been launched after the wrestler was taken into custody for allegedly grabbing the buttocks of another patron at the café.

The wrestler’s identification as Mohamed Elsayed, who took home a bronze medal in the Tokyo Games but ultimately lost in Paris, was verified by the Egyptian delegation despite the police withholding his name.

Elsayed will have a disciplinary hearing, according to the Egyptian Olympic Committee. According to a statement from the commission, he may be subject to lifelong bans from competition if the accusations prove to be accurate.

According to the statement, Elsayed was granted permission to watch the championship wrestling competition for his weight class, but he neglected to return to the mission headquarters and switch off his phone afterwards.
