The US grants Ukraine $3.9 billion for social and humanitarian expenses

Through the World Bank, the US has given Ukraine a $3.9 billion grant to boost wages, social programs, and humanitarian needs.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal declared on Monday that his country, Ukraine, has been granted a $3.9 billion grant by the United States through the World Bank. “This represents the first round of direct US budgetary assistance for 2024. We will be able to safely pass this financial term with the $7.8 billion in direct budgetary help that the United States will provide to Ukraine this year,” he stated.

With this assistance, Prime Minister Shmyhal expressed confidence that Ukraine could successfully navigate the fiscal year. According to the Ukrainian Finance Ministry, the money would go toward paying teachers, members of the State Emergency Service, and other public servants. In addition, low-income families, those with disabilities, and displaced persons will receive assistance from the award.

Serhiy Marchenko, the minister of finance, emphasized that the assistance will assist Ukraine in meeting its top social and humanitarian needs without piling up further debt.

Marchenko stated in a statement that the assistance will assist the Ukrainian government in paying back important social and humanitarian expenses without adding to the country’s debt.

The United States is now Ukraine’s biggest supplier of financial aid, having provided approximately $27 billion in direct budget support since February 2022. Marchenko noted that the government is receiving $60 billion in help overall, of which this grant is a component.
