Golden Girls: Simone Biles and the US women’s team win the gold medal in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris

At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the United States women’s gymnastics team won the gold medal in the team final on Tuesday, July 30.

Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera were the front-runners to win gold going into the competition, thus returning the United States to the Olympic team podium for the first time since 2016.

Biles has once again made history with this gold medal. With five gold medals from the Olympics and eight altogether, the 27-year-old has now achieved the best total of any American gymnast in history.

Biles now has more Olympic medals than any other American gymnast thanks to the gold medal her country’s women’s gymnastics team won, according to USA Today. She broke the tie with Shannon Miller by winning eight medals at the Olympics in three Games.

With her four gold medals from the Rio Olympics, Biles already owned the record for the most gold medals won by an American gymnast before her stunning victory on Tuesday. A silver and two bronze medals from Rio and Tokyo are also held by the record-breaker.

With a commanding performance of 171.296 points, the United States won the gold medal, about 6 points ahead of Italy in second place. Brazil won the bronze medal and returned home.

The U.S. team won silver in Tokyo just three years ago, finishing second behind the Russian squad. Following Simone Biles’ withdrawal from the event due to a mental block that caused her to become disoriented in the air, this happened. Since winning silver at the Beijing Games in 2008, this was the first time the United States had not placed first.
