Bologna defender Calafiori, an Italian, is signed by Arsenal

Arsenal announced on Monday that it has signed Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna to a long-term contract.

The 22-year-old’s transfer was not made public, but Italian and British media claim that Bologna will get an estimated 40 million euros ($43.26 million) from Arsenal, in addition to five million in add-on payments.

Under Thiago Motta’s direction, Calafiori flourished at Bologna last season, contributing significantly to their historic campaign in which they finished fifth in Serie A and earned a Champions League spot for the first time since 1964.

The defender joined Bologna from AS Roma and played in 30 Serie A games last season.

He participated in three of the four games in the European Championship after making his debut for his country in June. After Paolo Maldini, he is the second-youngest Italian player to compete in the Euros.

“Riccardo and his family are cordially invited to Arsenal. “He is an excellent acquisition who provides us with significant strength to fortify our defense,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said in a release.

“Riccardo has a great personality and character, and his unique skills will help us become stronger as we strive to take home significant prizes.

“We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad, and supporting him in the years to come.”

Arsenal takes on Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 17 to kick off their Premier League campaign.

One dollar is equivalent to 0.9246 euros.
