Only team captains are permitted to communicate with referees during the Olympics soccer matches

According to FIFA, during the Olympics, only captains will have the privilege to communicate and deliberate with the referee, as per the rule that was first put into practice at the European Championship last month.

FIFA is promoting the widespread adoption of this measure by competition organizers worldwide, following UEFA’s decision to implement it in all of their competitions. The goal is to improve communication and ensure clarity.

“Referees are an essential part of the game of football.” Ensuring the protection and respect of match officials is crucial for the future of the game,” emphasized FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

“Implementing measures such as ‘captain only’ is vital in preserving the essence of football and protecting those who enforce its rules.”

The world soccer governing body stated that they will keep a close eye on the effects of the “captain only” rule.

“This is a significant development that aims to promote fairness and respect in football, fostering effective communication between referees and teams,” commented Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA referees committee.

“As history has shown, actions taken to protect the integrity of football eventually gain acceptance.”

The Olympic soccer tournament begins on Wednesday with Spain playing against Uzbekistan at Paris’ Parc des Princes, while Argentina takes on Morocco in Saint-Etienne.
