Report: US men’s coach Berhalter is stepping down

Following a humiliating early exit at the Copa America on home soil, Gregg Berhalter will step down as head coach of the US men’s team, according to a report from Fox Sports on Wednesday.

Following a shocking 2-1 loss to Panama and a devastating 1-0 loss to Uruguay that instantly raised questions about Berhalter’s future, the United States was unable to advance from the tournament’s group stage.

A request for comment from U.S. Soccer was not immediately answered.

For Berhalter, who was supposed to lead the squad as the US gets ready to co-host the 2026 World Cup, the break represents a sharp turnabout in his career.

After taking the club to the World Cup knockout rounds in 2022, Berhalter—who was first appointed in 2018—became embroiled in a heated public spat with one of the squad’s most promising young players a few weeks later.

With the players’ full support, U.S. Soccer rehired Berhalter last June after a protracted search for a new head coach, since his contract was set to expire at the end of 2022.
