The Irish Sea was twice targeted by Russia’s Kilo assault submarine, according to Bloomberg News

Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian attack submarines have made two trips around the Irish Sea, according to a Monday Bloomberg News story that quoted three persons with knowledge of the situation.

According to the source, a Russian Kilo-class submarine was deployed near the Irish Sea for the first time approximately 18 months ago, and it was deployed again more recently.

It stated that the submarine movements were more extensive than anything British officers had ever witnessed.

The story went on to say, citing two persons with knowledge of the situation, that U.S. officials were aware of the sub movements.

Reuters reached out to the defense ministries of Russia, Ireland, Britain, and the White House, but none of them responded right away.

According to Bloomberg, the Kilo-class assault submarine is a diesel-electric vehicle that can fire torpedoes, naval mines, and Russia’s Kalibr cruise missiles.

In 2022, Russia announced that, as part of its ongoing military standoff with the West, all of its fleets would participate in a comprehensive series of maneuvers stretching from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

Simon Coveney, the Irish Foreign Minister, stated at the time that they were not welcome.
