A convoy attack in eastern Congo claimed the lives of two relief workers
Tearfund, a British humanitarian organization, announced on Monday that two of its workers had perished in an attack on their convoy in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The workers were attacked upon arrival on Sunday after traveling by vehicle from the town of Lubero to Butembo city in the war-torn North Kivu province, the statement claimed without providing any other information.
In mineral-rich North Kivu, which has been fighting an insurgency for more than two years that has exacerbated the province’s long-standing humanitarian crisis and resulted in over 2.7 million people being internally displaced, numerous armed factions vie for power and resources.
Alain Kiwewa, the local administrator, verified that the convoy had been attacked and reported that five of its cars had caught fire. He remained silent about the perpetrator.
