Tanzanian meat exports rose dramatically in 2023, according to the ministry of livestock

Tanzania’s meat exports increased dramatically between 2022 and 2023, from 1,774.3 tonnes to 14,701.2 tonnes, according to Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Abdallah Ulega’s Monday statement.

According to Ulega, the government’s initiatives to revitalize the livestock industry, such as a significant increase in budget allocation—which went from Tsh32.1 billion (roughly $12.2 million) in the fiscal year 2021–2022 to Tsh112 billion shillings (roughly $42.6 million) in the fiscal year 2023–2024—are to blame for the growth in meat exports.

Ulega stated that Tanzania’s development of critical infrastructures is important for enhancing the transportation of livestock and related products to both domestic and international markets. Ulega was speaking at the launch of the World Bank’s The 21st Tanzania Economic Update Report in Dar es Salaam, which focuses on the livestock sector.

Ulega added that Tanzania has made significant legal and regulatory reforms to improve the business climate, ease trade in cattle and animal products, and provide a stable and favorable economic environment for the private sector.

With 36.6 million cattle, Tanzania is currently home to the second-largest cow population in Africa, behind Ethiopia, according to the World Bank.
