After the police conclude their investigation, Worldcoin will restart operations in Kenya

According to a police document, Kenyan police have withdrawn their investigation into claims that Worldcoin had unlawfully gathered and transferred user personal data, allowing the cryptocurrency project to restart operations.

August of last year saw the suspension of Worldcoin by the authorities due to privacy concerns about the scanning of users’ iris scans in return for a digital identity to establish a new “identity and financial network”.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, co-founded Tools for Humanity, the business that is launching Worldcoin. According to its website, 5.7 million people have registered from more than 160 countries.

In a letter dated June 14, Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) informed Coulson Harney, a legal firm that represents Worldcoin, that “after review of the file, the Director of Public Prosecutions… directed that the file be closed with no further police action.”

A copy of the letter was obtained by Reuters on Thursday.

According to a statement from Tools for Humanity’s chief legal officer Thomas Scott, Worldcoin will shortly start accepting user registrations throughout Kenya.
“We are grateful for the DCI’s fair investigation and for the Director of Public Prosecutions’ determination to close the matter,” Scott stated.
