George explains his sudden resignation

According to Finidi George, he resigned from his position as head coach of Nigeria as the NFF decided to hire a foreign technical advisor.

Following George’s failure to win his first two competitive games as head coach of the Super Eagles this month, word leaked out last week that the NFF planned to reorganize the technical staff.

After a 1-1 tie in Uyo on June 7 and a 2=1 loss to Benin in Abidjan three days later, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finalists are still without a victory after four games in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Nigeria was considered the favorite in Group C, but with just three points so far, they could miss out on qualifying for the world tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Despite being four points behind joint leaders Rwanda, Bafana Bafana, and the Cheetahs in fifth position, George thought he could still turn the team’s fortunes around. However, he claimed that the governing body forced his hand.

After being named as Jose Peseiro’s replacement in April, the 53-year-old’s term was cut short after he was given temporary control over the friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March.

“I am writing to let you know that I have decided to resign from my position as head coach of the Super Eagles.” The recent alterations to the technical personnel of the team have prompted this decision.

“I want to sincerely thank the Nigerian people, the sports ministry, and the entire NFF leadership for giving me the opportunity to lead the Super Eagles.”

I promise to always be there for the team, and I hope the future holds nothing but the best for us.

Even though the most recent qualifying results weren’t perfect, I was still determined to steer our World Cup qualification campaign in the right direction. I think it’s appropriate for me to step down in light of the recent adjustments made to the technical crew.
