Amidst Tory Lanez’s 10-year prison sentence, his wife Raina Chassagne files for divorce
Less than a year after the couple’s wedding, the rapper’s ex-wife filed for divorce.
After being married to the disgraced hip hop artist for less than a year, Raina Nancy Chassagne, Tory Lanez’s wife, has filed for divorce.
According to court records that PEOPLE was able to obtain on June 10, Chassagne and his spouse are set to wed on June 25, 2023. The listed date of the separation is June 1, 2024.
Kai’lon, age 7, is the child of Chassagne and Lanez, 31, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson. She is requesting both legal and physical custody of Kai’lon.
Irreconcilable differences are Chassagne’s stated cause for seeking for divorce.
For shooting Megan Thee Stallion, whose true name is Megan Pete, in the feet in the Hollywood Hills during the summer of 2020, Lanez is presently serving a 10-year jail sentence.
People were unable to get in touch with Lanez’s current attorney right away. The family of Lanez was also contacted by PEOPLE seeking response.
In an August statement about the Canadian rapper’s prison sentence, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón stated, “Mr. Peterson has engaged in a pattern of conduct that was intended to intimidate Ms. Pete and silence her truths from being heard over the past three years.”
“For her incredible bravery and vulnerability as she underwent months of probing investigation and court appearances where she had to relive her trauma, and the public scrutiny that followed,” Gascón said in his commendation of the Grammy winner.
Megan, 29, posted a statement at the time that Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta had read.
“I have trouble staying in the now. The Houston resident stated, “After everything that happened, I cannot bring myself to be in the same room with Tory.” “I’ve experienced terror and torment.”
“Paid bloggers to spread false information, he treated my trauma like a joke when I could have been dead,” said Megan about Lanez.
“He blamed the media, the system, and lately, he’s been using his childhood trauma as an excuse for his behavior.”
On July 12, 2020, Lanez, Megan, and her former assistant and friend Kelsey Harris attended a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s house in the Los Angeles region. After the party, the three got into a fight, which is when the event happened.
Judge David Herriford refused Lanez bail in September 2023, citing the rapper’s conviction for a “violent felony” and his “history of violating court orders.”
Herriford also brought up Lanez’s past violations of protection orders, claiming that as a Canadian citizen, he posed a risk of deportation.
Chassagne does not ask for spousal support in her filing; instead, she makes a reserve for a future decision at the court’s discretion.
There was no mention of any assets or debts related to separate or quasi-community property for the ex-couple.
